Do you hear what I hear?
Lately while watching TV, I've noticed something about some new ads that was music to my ears.
Not once, but TWICE, I've been pleasantly surprised to hear the music of two of my most favourite artists.
Listen for Esthero on the new Zellers commercial ...
and Lilly Allen on the new Degree Commercial.
Then go buy their CDs.

Aw, I thought this was gonna be a send-up of artists selling-out and product placement, and then I was gonna talk about the new James Bond movie - a Sony picture - that prominently featured Sony laptops, Sony digital cameras, Sony cellphones, and even Sony recordable Blu-Ray (a Sony technology) DVDs... D'ah well, I guess I'll hafta settle for noting the same thing in video games, where I've noticed both new and old tracks from the likes of Kyuss, Queens Of The Stone Age, and Eagles Of Death Metal in the three latest Need For Speed titles :)
I considered that route, but you know what? they're both great artists who aren't getting the exposure they deserve. So if a commercial helps them get heard, I'm cool with that. Do what you gotta do.
True 'nuff! Selling-out's a touchy subject, and it's a label I'm not quick to slap on anyone without hearing the whole story first. A Canadian artist helping to advertise Zellers (and, effectively, herself) is hardly the end of the world, and an up-and-comer like Lily Allen in any advertisement isn't a surprise. We've all seen much worse; I'm just trying to relate to hearing personal favourite artists in popular media :)
