Oshawa: Vote GREEN

Congratulations to an old friend Adam Jobse on his candidacy for the Green Party of Canada in the current Federal election. It takes a lot of guts to put your name on an election ballot. I haven't been able to find much on his activities in the riding of Oshawa, but I will be watching. So far, there is only this from the Durham Region News.

OSHAWA -- Voters in the Oshawa riding will see familiar names
on the ballot in the upcoming election, as the three frontrunners from the June 2004 race have all thrown their hats in the ring for another run at the federal
seat.

Incumbent Conservative MP Colin Carrie will be running against Oshawa Councillor Louise Parkes for the Liberal party, CUPE President Sid Ryan for the NDP and a new face for the Green Party, Adam Jobse.

With only a few hundred votes separating the Liberal, NDP and Conservative candidates in the previous showdown, this is expected to be one the country's tightest and most interesting
three-way races.

MP Carrie is a chiropractor and co-owner of Lakeridge
Chiropractic and Wellness Clinic. He helped re-elect Oshawa MPP Jerry Ouelette in 2003 and is also an executive member of the Durham Chiropractic Society. Mr. Carrie is married with three children.

Ms. Parkes is currently serving her second term as municipal councillor for Wards 5 and 6. She has been the City's deputy mayor and sits as chairman of the development services committee and a member of audit, budget and corporate services committee. Ms. Parkes is also active with the Rotary Club of Oshawa and is director of the Oshawa Senior
Citizens' Centre and the Robert McLaughlin Gallery. She is married to Darryl Sherman, a lawyer and owner of Wilson Furniture in Oshawa.

Mr. Ryan is president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and has been a union activist for 30 years. A staunch NDP supporter, he has worked for the party in
every election since arriving in Canada from Ireland in 1975. In addition to serving as president and canvassing manager for the NDP Durham Central Riding Association, he ran as the NDP candidate for Oshawa in the last provincial election. Mr. Ryan has lived in Durham Region for more than 20 years, and is
married with three daughters.

Biographical information for Green Party candidate Adam Jobse was not immediately available, as he was only recently appointed by the Oshawa riding association.

In the 2004 election, Mr. Carrie won his seat with 15,815 votes, followed closely by Sid Ryan with 15,325 and Louise Parkes with 14,510. Green Party candidate Liisa Whalley took 1,850.

According to Elections Canada, the Oshawa riding has a population of 113,662 and encompasses the area south and east of a line that commences at the King Street West city limit, and runs east to Oshawa Creek, north to Rossland Road, east to Simcoe Street North, north to Winchester Road and east to the Oshawa City limit.
